“Tots junts” (all together) - a manifesto to tackle the Covid crisis
Anyone familiar with the political scene in Spain and the Balearic Islands, which was characterised by hostility, even hatred of political opponents, rubbed their eyes in amazement these days: (almost) all political parties, business associations and trade unions followed the call of a foundation and signed a manifesto entitled “Tots junts - all together” in Palma's congress centre. In this manifesto, the signatories commit to work together to address the health, economic and social crisis in the Balearic Islands. The manifesto consists of four parts - 1. defending people, 2. defending the economy, 3. rethinking the future and 4. EU funds. The representatives of the signatories want to meet regularly to discuss and review the implementation of the goals. A small miracle!
No travel ban, yet: Mallorca-bashing shows effect
Although the Robert Koch Institute removed the Balearic Islands from the list of risk areas on the 14th of March 2021, German politicians did not miss any opportunity to warn against travelling abroad, especially to Mallorca. In doing so, they did not hesitate to make false statements of fact and tell lies to discourage Germans from travelling to their favourite island. About 40,000 Germans did not let their holiday dreams be destroyed by this. However, this was only 10% of the visitors who normally visit Mallorca over Easter. Newly imposed tests and threats of travel bans and quarantine on return, as well as the general Mallorca-bashing, caused the number of guests to swell again immediately after Easter. “Audacter calumniare, semper aliquid haeret” said the ancient Romans. In English: “Slander boldly, something always sticks”.
Mallorca-bashing - great response to Lutz Minkner's column in Mallorca Magazin from 02.04.2021
The column in German by Lutz Minkner in Mallorca Magazin of 02.04.2021 under the title “Mallorca-bashing” met with a great and positive response both from MM readers and in the press. The BILD of 09.04.2021 even called on the SPD politician Lauterbach, who had spoken out particularly vehemently and with false suspicions and false factual claims against Mallorca travel, to apologise to Mallorca for “Mallorca-bashing”. And the Mallorca Zeitung also reported on this topic: „"Bild-Zeitung" fordert Entschuldigung von Karl Lauterbach für Mallorca-Bashing“. The Mallorca Zeitung had asked Lauterbach several times to comment on the accusations of unjustified scaremongering directed against him. Lauterbach did not take up these offers! “Mr. Lauterbach, intellectual honesty looks different!”
2. Mallorca - Construction / Investment
Portocolom: dispute over construction work on the waterfront
Portocolom has experienced citizens who fight fiercely and loudly when it comes to changing the character of the popular seaside village. Now the citizens were called into action once again when construction workers wanted to carry out work to pave the promenade. A citizens' meeting was called for this purpose, in which the building administration had to answer questions. The work was necessary for safety reasons, according to the building administration. The shore areas would have to be reinforced from the inside, but the outer structure should retain its historic appearance, cement would not be seen, and archaeologists would accompany the work. Thus, for the time being, peace has returned to Portocolom, but an appointed commission is to observe the progress of the construction work.
3. Mallorca – Economy
Tourism I: Hotels offer up to 30% off in May to revive travel buzz
Over the Easter holidays, the hotels already open on the island were able to establish and process a sufficient volume of bookings. However, demand is expected to flatten out again between now and Whitsun. For this reason, the hoteliers have decided to keep the hotels open and offer discounts of up to 30%. However, some hotel groups, such as Iberostar, see no scope for further discounts. How the booking situation will develop depends on demand from the German and British markets. Especially from Great Britain, a revival of the market is expected should Boris Johnson lift the travel warning for Britons.
Tourism II: When will the first cruise ships dock in Mallorca again?
The tour guides of several cruise companies have complained to Prime Minister Francina Armengol in order to achieve the quickest possible opening of the ports of the Balearic Islands for cruise ships. They point out, among other things, that cruise tourism in the Canary Islands has been running again since 20.10.2020, without any increase in the number of infections. The Carnival Group, to which the AIDA fleet belongs, is also pushing for the opening of the Balearic ports. The first AIDA is to anchor in the port of Palma on 15 May 2021, if permitted.
Traffic: Relaxed travelling to Mallorca by private jet
Private air traffic between Germany and the Balearic Islands boomed during the Easter week. The Balearic airports reported an average of 43 landings daily. A total of 387 private jets landed on the islands in the period 28.03. - 05.04.2021, 220 of which landed on Mallorca. The reasons for the boom of private flights are obvious: on the one hand, the offer of flight connections to Mallorca is still small, on the other hand, more and more Mallorca friends appreciate the increased hygiene safety and the preferential handling during take-offs and landings (own terminal, health checks without queuing, no crowds). If you want to know more about the offer of flying with private jets, you can find more information here: “AIRGO Privat Airline”
Trading I: ALDI and LIDL open more branches in Mallorca
The “hare and hedgehog” competition between the German food discounters ALDI and LIDL on Mallorca continues. On 14.04.2021, ALDI opened its tenth branch on Mallorca. It is located in Cala Millor, offers 2,000 products and will employ 10 people. A total of 150 employees work at ALDI on Mallorca. Competitor LIDL, which recently opened a branch in Paguera, will soon open its 22nd island branch in Can Picafort in the north of the island.
Trading II: In Spain, 30 H&M branches will be closed, Mallorca not affected for the time being
The Swedish fashion company H&M wants to close 30 of its shops in Spain. The reason given is the drastic drop in sales due to the Covid pandemic. The closures will affect 1,100 jobs. In addition, employees are to be put on short-time work. On Mallorca, the company operates three shops Porto Pi, FAN and Palma Old Town), which are initially not to be affected by the closures.

European Accounting: new guide “Housing - substantial savings”
Those who engage in commercial activities in Spain are confronted with a number of tax consequences which, if not properly designed, can lead to considerable disadvantages in the form of an unnecessarily high tax burden. A good example of the opportunities offered by intelligent structuring is the Spanish special regime for real estate companies for corporate income tax purposes. With this regime, an effective income tax burden of 3.75% can be achieved. If set up accordingly, the structure also leads to an exemption from wealth tax and a far-reaching reduction in inheritance tax. A new “Mallorca 2030 Guide” entitled “Housing - Substantial Savings in Spanish Income, Wealth and Inheritance Tax through an Optimised Structure” deals with this topic. You can access the PDF version of the guide in German here: "Wegweiser - Mallorca 2030"
